World Intellectual Property Day – 26 April
In 2000, World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) member states designated April 26 – the day on which the WIPO Convention came into force in 1970 – as World Intellectual Property Day with the aim of increasing general understanding of IP. Since then, World IP Day has offered a unique opportunity each year to join with others around the globe to consider how IP contributes to the flourishing of music and the arts and to driving the technological innovation that helps shape our world.
Under this year’s theme, “IP and music: Feel the beat of IP”, the World IP Day 2025 campaign explores how IP rights and innovation policies empower creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs to bring fresh ideas to the music industry, safeguarding the work of songwriters, composers, performers, and all those who shape the music that moves us. To echo World IP Day 2025, the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) will organise the following activities in April 2025.
- “Licensing Academy” Workshop Details Register Now
"Licensing Academy" is a program of the Asian Licensing Conference with IPD as the Lead Sponsor. The workshop will be held on-site on 28-29 April 2025 at Hall 5G, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year, the workshop will focus on two key topics, "China Opportunity (2) - A Dialogue with Wan Pin Chu, Music Composer of "Ne Zha 2"" and “The Future of Storytelling: How Technology Transforms Narrative in Immersive Art”, where renowned experts will delve into trending IP licensing related topics that you won't want to miss.
Under this year’s theme, “IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity”, the World IP Day 2024 campaign explores how intellectual property encourages and can amplify the innovative and creative solutions that are so crucial to building our common future. To celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day, the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) will organise the following publicity and educational events:
Being one of the programmes under the HK SciFest 2023, the talk aims to provide students with a platform to meet outstanding innovators and scientists with remarkable achievements in innovation and technology, induce their interest in science and encourage them to pursue a career in science and research industry in the future.
The talk was held at the Hong Kong Science Museum from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm on 1 April 2023 (Saturday). The talk targeted the general public, secondary school and tertiary students and the speakers shared their journey from innovation to commercialisation, and the importance of intellectual property in the process.
The exhibition was held at the Central Market from 24 April to 2 May 2023. There will be information display boards, photo areas and virtual reality games experience to enhance public understanding of intellectual property through fun-filled interactive activities.
The promotion truck traveled across Hong Kong from 16 to 29 April 2023 to promote intellectual property protection among the general public. Apart from illustrations on the truck body introducing types of intellectual property, there are also multimedia games and related information displayed inside the vehicle for the public to learn more about intellectual property.

It targets industry beginners and the licensing experts will introduce the basic concept of intellectual property licensing in simple and easy-to-understand terms.
Under this year’s theme, “IP and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future”, the World IP Day 2022 campaign takes a closer look to how young inventors, creators and entrepreneurs can use intellectual property (IP) rights to achieve their goals, generate income, create jobs, tackle local and global challenges and support community and national development. Special Television Series - “IP • New Opportunities”
To celebrate World IP Day 2022, a prelude to the special television series “IP • New Opportunities” premiered on RTHK TV 31 on 26 April 2022 at 9:25pm. Titled “Innovative Robot Technology”, the episode highlighted the importance of intellectual property to technology research and development. View the episode here
This series of 12 5-minute episodes will be broadcast on RTHK TV 31 starting from 17 May 2022, at 7:25pm every Tuesday. The series will feature how enterprises can make good use of Hong Kong's unique resources, advantages and intellectual property professional services to capture business opportunities.

IP Literacy Concert
The Intellectual Property Department (IPD) will organise an online concert to encourage the development of original music and to promote intellectual property literacy among the younger generation and the general public.

- A movie screening, organised by Motion Picture Association and U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau, supported by Intellectual Property Department and International Federation Against Copyright Theft (Greater China) Limited will be held on 25 April 2019.
- A Closing Ceremony of “Respect Copyright” Campaign will be held on 4 May 2019. This Campaign, comprising design competitions and a seminar on copyright and creative industries for students in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and tertiary institutions, is organised by Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society, and co-organised by the Intellectual Property Department and Customs & Excise Department.
- The Scout Fun Day for Respect for IP Rights will be held on 5 May 2019, 2:30-5:00 pm in MacPherson Playground. There will be a series of activities which include game booths, exhibitions and performances to promote the respect for IP rights. The Fun Day is free of charge and no registration is required. It is organised by Scout Association of Hong Kong and supported by the Intellectual Property Department and the Customs & Excise Department.
The theme of this year’s World IP Day is “Powering change: Women in innovation and creativity” to celebrate the brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of the women who are driving change in our world and shaping our common future. Celebration of this year highlights how the IP system can support innovative and creative women (and everyone) in their quest to bring their amazing ideas to market. In response to World IP Day 2018, Intellectual Property Department (IPD) will organise the following celebrating activities in April 2018.
- A celebration reception for stakeholders in the IP industry will be held on 26 April 2018.

The Lecture “Meet the Innovators – The First Step to the Journey of a Scientist, a Start-uper and an Entrepreneur” under “HK SciFest 2018” will be held on 21 April 2018 in Hong Kong History Museum (free admission). Successful players in the field of innovation and technology will share their success stories and the roles of intellectual property in their success.
“Meet the Innovators – The First Step to the Journey of a Scientist, a Start-uper and an Entrepreneur” Lecture
The Lecture, “Meet the Innovators – The First Step to the Journey of a Scientist, a Start-uper and an Entrepreneur”, is organised by Intellectual Property Department as one programme of “HK SciFest 2018”. The Lecture aims to provide students with a platform to meet successful players in the field of innovation and technology, and, hence, unleash their interest in science and encourage enthusiastic students to pursue a career in research and development (R&D).
The Lecture will be held on 21 April 2018 (Saturday) in Hong Kong Museum of History and conducted in Cantonese, with students at Secondary Three and above being the target audience. Invited speakers will share their success stories of commercialising research achievements and inventions, and the roles of intellectual property in their success.

- World Intellectual Property Day “I Pledge” Original Movies and Music was co-organised with The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups on 25 April 2014. Through workshops and live music performance, the event aimed to encourage creativity and the development of original movies and music as well as to promote intellectual property protection. - A new Announcement of Public Interest (API) jointly produced by Intellectual Property Department, the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (IPD) and Guangdong Intellectual Property Office broadcasted starting from 22 April 2014 in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province to promote the "No Fakes Pledge" Scheme and the respect of intellectual property rights in both places;
- a screening of the winning short videos of the "Hong Kong Heart 2013 Short Video Competition", jointly organised by Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, the International Federation of Creativity and Technology and the IPD, was held on 24 April 2014;
- two local newspaper supplements (in Chinese and English respectively) were released on 24 April 2014;
- a movie screening, organised by the IPD and Hong Kong International Screen Association Limited, was held on 26 April 2014; and

- a one-day workshop on “Advanced Professional IP Update Celebrating World IP day”, jointly organised by the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM) and the IPD, was held on 24 April; and
- an award presentation ceremony of the "Respect Copyright" creative competitions for kindergarten, primary and secondary students, organised by the Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society and co-organised by the IPD and Hong Kong Customs, was held on 4 May.
The theme of this year is “Visionary Innovators”.

a celebration reception attended by major stakeholders in the IP industry was held on 26 April. Programme including “Tian Tian Xiang Shang” figures exhibition which demonstrates creative collaboration of designers across different fields and a mime performance. Photos to share;

- an award presentation ceremony of the Short Film (MTV) Competition, organised by the Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society and co-organised by IPD, Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department and Hong Kong Education City Limited, was held on 16 April;

The theme of this year is “Innovation – Linking the World”.
To celebrate the World IP Day, the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) organised the following activities:
- two local newspaper supplements (in Chinese and English respectively) were released on 26 April;
- a local radio programme, including five 2-minute segments and two 15-second promos, was broadcast from 20 - 26 April;
- a celebration reception was held on 26 April attended by major stakeholders in the IP industry;
- a movie screening, organised by the International Federation Against Copyright Theft (Greater China) and collaborated with IPD targeting youngsters in Hong Kong, on 24 April;
- a video clip competition, organised by the Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society and co-organised by IPD, Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department and Hong Kong Education City Limited. With the theme of “Respect copyright to promote creativity and awareness of IP protection” among students and young people, a launching ceremony was held on 27 April.
